Item Description:
European green crabs are considered one of the most invasive species in marine environments around the world. Here in British Columbia they pose a significant threat to the balance and health of our fragile marine habitats, as they:
• Destroy critical eelgrass habitat
• Outcompete native species for habitat and food
• Prey on juvenile salmon
• Have very few predators (which allows populations to increase exponentially)
Distinct features of European green crabs include:
• Five pointed spines on either side of eyes
• Three rounded nodes between eyes
• Varying colour of mottled green/grey/brown
• Shell width of 5-10cm
If you suspect you have seen a European green crab, please report it immediately to Fishers and Oceans Canada at AISPACIFIC@dfo-mpo.gc.ca. Be sure to include any photographs and the specific (GPS) location of the suspected sighting.
This digital download package includes a zip file containing 5 JPEG files and 5 PDF files that can be shared, printed, and distributed for educational, personal, and non-commercial use.
